Often an owner has a strong desire not to activate fire alarm notification in their facility so as to not needlessly disturb facility operations and occupants. This presentation details the Code-approved options for delaying the activation of fire alarm notification. These options include automatic notification, presignal notification, positive alarm sequence, and detector cross-zoning. This presentation will discuss the code requirements for each option and the critical considerations for an owner and designer, as well as the authority having jurisdiction who must approve these unique options.

Larry Rietz, SET, has over 28 years of construction industry experience, the last 24 spent designing, commissioning, testing, and inspecting of fire alarm, mass notification/emergency communication, and related life safety systems. Mr. Rietz provides design and technical services to a variety of clients, including fire alarm and related system design and commissioning, project management, smoke management design and commissioning, plan reviews, code conformance studies, and technical assessments. His experiences with fire alarm design projects include a large variety of campus and high-rise fire alarm systems from an assortment of system manufacturers. Recent projects have included a design and implementation of a large fire alarm and mass notification/emergency/communication system including a variety of audible, visual, and textual displays and the design of a large (100+ building) radio frequency fire alarm reporting system. Project responsibilities are either as the lead designer and/or project manager.
